For decades, Arthur Jafa clipped photographs from magazines, newspapers, and advertisements and organized them in notebooks, some of which served as references for his filmmaking and cinematography work. In recent years, he has migrated this practice over to his computer. APEX is a file of digital images that he has presented in different forms, including as a grid on a panel and as a fast-paced video.

At roughly eight minutes, the video packs in images that flash by to an electronic beat intercut with an arrhythmically pulsing beep. Pulled from a broad range of popular sources, among them sci-fi and horror films, these uncountable images include: Mickey Mouse; Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth; electron microscope images of insects; black athletes, musicians, and artists; shots of an eclipse; skulls and mutilated bodies. Seen one after the next in this way, radical pairings and contrasts emerge, in which heroes and villains, past and present become enmeshed in what Jafa has termed “spooky entanglements.”

Arthur Jafa – APEX (2013)

Trong nhiều thập kỷ, Arthur Jafa đã cắt hình ảnh từ tạp chí, báo in và quảng cáo, sắp xếp chúng vào các sổ tay – một số được dùng làm tư liệu tham khảo cho công việc quay phim và làm điện ảnh của ông. Những năm gần đây, ông chuyển toàn bộ thói quen này sang không gian số. APEX là một tệp hình ảnh kỹ thuật số mà ông đã trình bày dưới nhiều hình thức khác nhau, bao gồm dạng lưới trên bảng panel và video có nhịp độ nhanh.

Trong khoảng tám phút, video dồn nén hàng loạt hình ảnh lướt qua theo nhịp điện tử, đan xen với những tiếng bíp không đều, tạo cảm giác giật nhịp. Những hình ảnh này được trích từ nhiều nguồn đại chúng khác nhau, bao gồm phim khoa học viễn tưởng, phim kinh dị và truyền thông đại chúng. Danh sách hình ảnh trải dài từ: chuột Mickey, Frederick Douglass và Sojourner Truth, ảnh chụp côn trùng dưới kính hiển vi điện tử, các vận động viên, nghệ sĩ da đen, hình ảnh nhật thực, đến các hộp sọ và cơ thể bị biến dạng.

Khi được trình chiếu nối tiếp với tốc độ cao, những hình ảnh này tạo nên chuỗi đối sánh và tương phản đầy bất ngờ, nơi các anh hùng và kẻ phản diện, quá khứ và hiện tại, bị cuốn vào thứ mà Jafa gọi là “những sự rối rắm rùng rợn” (spooky entanglements).
