Listening to scent, smelling the sea

In Under the Horizon (2016), Colombian-born artist Oswaldo Maciá creates a powerful sensory meditation on migration, displacement, and the vast, unknowable nature of the sea. This large-scale olfactory and sound installation was first presented as part of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in India, positioned near the water’s edge—where histories of trade, exile, and oceanic passage echo.

The installation combines a custom scent composition evoking the smell of the sea, algae, and decay with surrounding soundscapes—including recordings of ship horns and distant coastal environments. Together, these elements immerse visitors in a sensory field that speaks to the invisible currents of movement, loss, and memory that cross oceans.

Rather than illustrating migration through imagery, Under the Horizon speaks through absence, atmosphere, and embodied experience. The work references maritime routes used by refugees and traders alike, evoking both urgency and reverence. In doing so, Maciá uses scent and sound as poetic materials—inviting the audience to breathe in histories that are often silenced or erased.

Under the Horizon challenges the dominance of the visual in contemporary art and asserts that to sense is also to know. Through this non-verbal, deeply affective approach, Maciá turns a vast body of water into a space of remembrance and reflection—felt through the nose and ear, rather than seen with the eye.

Nghe bằng mùi hương, ngửi bằng âm thanh của biển cả

Trong tác phẩm Under the Horizon (2016), nghệ sĩ gốc Colombia Oswaldo Maciá tạo ra một sắp đặt mùi hương và âm thanh quy mô lớn, như một thi phẩm cảm quan về di cư, sự dịch chuyển và cái mênh mông không thể nắm bắt của đại dương. Tác phẩm được trình bày lần đầu tại Biennale Kochi-Muziris (Ấn Độ), đặt sát mép nước – nơi vang vọng lịch sử của giao thương, lưu vong và hành trình vượt biển.

Tác phẩm kết hợp một hỗn hợp mùi hương được điều chế riêng, gợi nhắc đến mùi của biển, tảo và sự phân hủy, cùng với các trường âm thanh bao quanh – gồm tiếng còi tàu, âm thanh vùng duyên hải xa xăm. Tác phẩm gợi nhắc những tuyến hàng hải từng được người tị nạn và thương nhân sử dụng, đồng thời khơi dậy cảm giác vừa khẩn cấp vừa thành kính. Ở đây, Maciá sử dụng mùi và âm thanh như chất liệu thơ – mời gọi khán giả hít thở những lịch sử đã bị im lặng hoặc xóa mờ.

Under the Horizon đặt ra thách thức với sự thống trị của thị giác trong nghệ thuật đương đại, và khẳng định rằng cảm nhận cũng là một hình thức nhận thức. Bằng phương pháp phi ngôn ngữ và đầy tính xúc cảm, Maciá biến đại dương thành không gian của tưởng niệm và chiêm nghiệm – nơi ký ức được cảm nhận bằng khứu giác và thính giác, chứ không chỉ bằng mắt.
